MIT'S CHRISTOPHER BURGE 2001 OVERTON PRIZE AWARDEE

Established in memory of Chris Overton, the OVERTON PRIZE is awarded to an outstanding investigator who has already made a significant contribution to the field of computational biology either through research, education, service, or a combination. This award is made on an annual basis. The recipient presents the Overton Lecture at ISMB, the annual meeting of the International Society for Computational Biology.

The selection committee has unanimously selected Christopher B. Burge, of the Department of Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as this year's recipient of the Overton Prize for his work on identifying and modeling genes in higher eukaryotic organisms. The theory and tools that he developed have advanced our understanding of the human genome and aided scientists throughout the biomedical sciences in their work.

This is a call for papers for the 2nd IEEE Symposium on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering (BIBE 2001) to be held in Washington, DC on November 4-6, 2001.

Bioinformatics and Bioengineering are complementary disciplines that hold great promise for the advancement of research and development in complex medical and biological systems, agriculture, environment, public health, drug design, and so on. Research and development in these two areas are impacting the science and technology of fields such as medicine, food production, forensics, etc. by advancing fundamental concepts in molecular biology and in medicine, by helping us understand living organisms at multiple levels, by developing innovative implants and prosthetics, and by improving tools and techniques for the detection, prevention and treatment of diseases.

The BIBE Symposium provides a common platform for the cross fertilization of ideas, and to help shape knowledge and scientific achievements by bridging these two very important and complementary disciplines into an interactive and attractive forum. Keeping this objective in mind, BIBE solicits original contributions in the following non exclusive list of areas.
